Story of U 476

On 24th May 1944 north-west of Trondheim at 07:16 Hrs, a 210 SQN Catalina of 18 Grp CC RAF
(Capt F W L Maxwell SAAF) sighted a surfaced U-Boat.
As they closed for attack, U-476 put up a strong flak defence, yet Maxwell dropped 6 D/Cs.
The U-Boat circled around and slowly went down by the stern, lingering in a bows up attitude.
U-990 and U-276 came to the rescue, between them they saved 21 crew including the commander.
U-990 sent a torpedo into U-476 to finish her off.
Meanwhile U-276 suffered 3 casualties during an air attack while rescuing crew of U-476.
